The Santos-Dumont traces its origin to 1904, when Louis Cartier designed a wristwatch for the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont so he could read the time while flying. This example is from the large model in stainless steel, reference 4240 (commercial reference WSSA0022), introduced with the collection’s 2019 relaunch.

The satin-brushed silvered dial has a sunray finish, Roman numerals and blued-steel sword hands beneath a sapphire crystal. The steel case measures 43.5mm × 31.4mm with a thickness of 7.3mm, fitted with a beaded crown set with a blue synthetic spinel cabochon. It runs on Cartier’s high-autonomy quartz movement and is water resistant to 30 metres. Presented on a Cartier blue alligator strap with steel tang buckle.

The screwed case back carries the Cartier signature, the handwritten signature of Alberto Santos-Dumont, and the reference and serial numbers.
